Stendörren – gateway to the sea
Your backpack is loaded with the tastiest picnic and your best camera. Sunglasses are on. You’re ready for an archipelago adventure in the place where sea meets forest and cultural heritage comes to life once more.
Stendörren Nature Reserve is not far from Nyköping, with Route 219 whisking you to one of the most popular places on the Sörmland coast. Unless you choose to go by sea, of course. The large reserve offers many exciting adventures throughout the day.
Cross the suspension bridges to the nearby islands and take a dip. Rest on the rocks or climb the observation tower and gaze out over the sea – you might be able to see all the way to the archipelago’s last outpost, Hävringe.
Try your hand at fishing, hunt for small creepy-crawlies or discover the history of the place, which still has a strong presence. Glide along in your kayak or take your boat to Granholmen, or any of the other wild islands of the outer archipelago. The circular trail Stendörren Runt takes you on a longer walk around the nature reserve. Enjoy the freedom and sea air of your favourite spot, and make the most of the many tempting options.
Experiences through time
For centuries, Stendörren has been an important place for many people. The traces of history are clear and there is much to learn about coastal living in times gone by. This was the gateway to the sea and for generations fishermen and farmers lived in Stendörren in all its different guises.
On the Experience Trail, which starts near the reserve’s visitor centre, you can immerse yourself in the history of the area. The trail takes you two kilometres through rocky terrain, coastal meadows and forests. The yellow posts along the waterside carry text and pictures about life in the past in an outdoor exhibition by Sörmlands Museum.
If you look carefully on the Experience Trail, you might also find a beetle scurrying about, a merganser nest to peer into and several other animals to spot. Hope you packed your binoculars!
Did you know?
- The narrow strait between the mainland and the island of Krampö has been known as “Stendörr sund” (Stone Door Sound) since the 13th century, probably because the route is seen as a doorway to the inner archipelago or out to sea.
- Four suspension bridges take you from the mainland to the islands of Äspskär and Stora Krokholmen.
There are about 15 islands in the outer archipelago within the reserve, many of which can be reached by canoe or boat. - At Lerviksudden there is accessible parking and a gravel path leading to a barbecue area with sea views.
